Ministry of Education Malawi to Engage 4200 Auxiliary Teachers

The Ministry of Education (MoE) has announced plans to engage 4,200 Auxiliary Teachers (ATs) under the Malawi Education Reform Programme (MERP). This recruitment targets graduates from the Initial Primary Teacher Education (IPTE) cohorts who have successfully completed their training and are ready to support the education system. The teachers will be deployed across thirty-three (33) education districts in Malawi to help address the shortage of qualified teachers in public primary schools.

The engagement is temporary and will cover one academic year (2025/2026). All selected auxiliary teachers are required to report to their assigned schools by 10 November 2025, with a strict reporting deadline of 17 November 2025. Failure to report by the stated date will lead to automatic withdrawal of the offer. Each auxiliary teacher will receive a monthly honorarium of MK150,000, which serves as financial support during the contract period.

The Ministry has already shared a list of eligible schools with all District Education Offices (DEOs) to guide placements and ensure transparency in the allocation process. The deployment of auxiliary teachers forms part of the government’s broader strategy to reduce the pupil-to-qualified teacher ratio (PqTR) and improve the quality of education at the foundational level.

Through this initiative, the Ministry aims to enhance teaching capacity, promote effective learning, and ensure equitable access to education in all districts, especially in underserved areas. The Ministry also emphasizes that this engagement is temporary and does not guarantee permanent employment after the contract expires.

By recruiting trained IPTE graduates, the government continues to demonstrate its commitment to strengthening the education workforce and improving learning outcomes across the country.
