IUCEA is a regional intergovernmental accreditation organisation of the East African Community, covering the republics of Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda and South Sudan.

The accreditation, effective 10th December 2025, follows a comprehensive review and evaluation exercise which was conducted in September 2025. The exercise involved assessment of the programme design and implementation by a panel of international reviewers. A site visit to MZUNI was also conducted to assess the infrastructure, facilities, staffing, institutional capacity in terms of governance, robustness of internal quality assurance system, student support systems, financial sustainability and compliance with specific regional quality standards.

The programmes which were submitted and have been accredited are:

  • Master of Science in Applied Chemistry

    • Master of Science in Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences

The assessment process was supported by the Malawi Government and World Bank-funded African Centre of Excellence in Neglected and Underutilised Biodiversity (ACENUB), as well as internal support from the Directorate of Quality Assurance and Enhancement and the Regional Accreditation Task Team.

MZUNI Vice-Chancellor, Professor Wales Singini, stated that the accreditation is a significant milestone and a strong endorsement of the University’s growth and pursuit of excellence. It reflects the considerable impact the University is making at both regional and international levels. It is a major statement regarding the recognition and legitimacy of the qualifications awarded by MZUNI.

MZUNI offers a total of 84 undergraduate and postgraduate academic programmes, all duly accredited by the National Council for Higher Education.
