The National Youth Council of Malawi (NYCOM) is pleased to announce the first cohort of successful applicants under the Youth Innovation Fund (YIF), following a nationwide call for applications targeting youth-led innovations across Malawi. This marks a significant step in the government’s efforts to harness youth creativity, enterprise, and innovation as a driver for national development.
The Youth Innovation Fund is a flagship initiative of the Government of Malawi aimed at accelerating the productive capacity of young people within the Government’s priority sectors in line with the country’s long-term development blueprint, Malawi 2043. This programme is also in line with Priority Area 1 of the 2023-2028 National Youth Policy: Youth Employment, Enterprise and Skills Development and of course Part 1 of the 2024-2030 NYCOM Strategic Plan; Youth Economic Empowerment, Entrepreneurship and Innovation.
While we are still monitoring implementation progress of the 85 youth-led innovations in Tier 2 and Tier 3. The Council is today announcing 63 innovations under Tier 1. These selected projects reflect the innovation, resilience, and entrepreneurial potential of young Malawians. Under Tier 1, these awardees will receive between Krimlion to Kärnlion.
The successful Tier 1 applicants will now advance to a comprehensive pre-award capacity development programme, tentatively scheduled for 19th to 23rd January 2024. The sessions will be conducted in two regions:
Southern Region – Blantyre
Central & Northern Region – Alpanda
Tier 1 innovation will go beyond traditional training. Participants will undergo a structured incubation and ideation process designed to refine, strengthen, and transform their innovative ideas into scalable, market-ready and viable solutions.
The programme will equip emerging innovators with essential skills and practical tools through modules such as:
Problem Identification and Theory of Change – clarifying the core challenge and defining measurable pathways for impact.
Business Model Development – shaping sustainable and scalable business and delivery models.
Financial Management – building foundational skills for budgeting, cost management, and resource planning, tax compliance and bookkeeping.
Effective Pitching and Storytelling – enhancing participants’ ability to communicate their innovation compellingly to partners, funders, and stakeholders.
Through this integrated approach, Tier 1 applicants will be supported not only in building capacity but also in transforming their ideas into high-impact innovations ready for implementation.
This milestone affirms NYCOM’s commitment to supporting young people as active architects of Malawi’s development.
