Botswana Opens Applications for the 2026/27 Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship


The Ministry of Higher Education invites citizens of Botswana to apply for the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship for the August 2026 intake. The programme provides twenty opportunities for eligible applicants to study in Hungary in either Hungarian or English. You receive full tuition support, accommodation and living cost assistance for the duration of your studies.

The scholarship supports undergraduate, masters and doctoral studies in approved fields. You apply through the online system on the official website and follow all requirements set out in the call. Further details, study options and application guidelines are available at www.stipendiumhungaricum.hu.

The Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship is only offered under the following Levels of Study:

i. Doctoral (Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)) /Doctor of Liberal Arts (DLA)) studies in any field of interest.

ii. Masters (Master of Arts (MA) /Master of Science (MSc)) in any available field of study.

iii. Full-time undergraduate (Bachelor of Arts (BA) / Bachelor of Science (BSc) in the study fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM), Medical and Health Science and Agriculture.

NB: Qualifying applicants who are registered under Social Services should indicate this in their application letters and attach supporting letter from the Social Worker.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

Applicants should be a citizen of Botswana in good health.

Minimum Academic Criteria:

Applicants should:
i. Have attained minimum of 48 points (BGCSE or equivalent) for Mainstream applicants and 43 points (BGCSE or equivalent) for OVC/RAC/SEN applicants if applying for Bachelors’ Degree programme.
ii. Have completed Secondary General Education (BGCSE or equivalent) in less than two (2) years from the date of this application if applying for Degree programme.
iii. Hold a Bachelor’s Degree of First Class or at least Second Class Upper Division (2:1) if applying for Masters programme.
iv. Hold a Masters qualification if applying for PhD programme.
v. Adhere to the health requirements as prescribed by Sponsor.

Age Criteria:

Applicants born after 31 August 2008 are not eligible to apply as noted on Stipendium Hungaricum call for applications guideline.

APPLICATION DOCUMENTS:

All applicants are advised that the following documents will be required during the online application and please note that only files with a maximum size of 4MB can be uploaded in the system. UPLOAD BY THE 15TH OF JANUARY 2026

i. A recent passport sized Photo of the candidate.
ii. Minimum 1 paged Motivation letter, typed in Times New Roman – 12-point font size letter.

iii. Proof of Language proficiency proving that the previous levels of education was conducted in English.

iv. Certified copies of valid National ID card – ‘Omang ’.

v. Certified copies of valid Passport – data page only.

vi. Certified copy of BGCSE Certificate or equivalent (or result slip) for Bachelor’s Degree applicants.

vii. Certified copy of official academic transcript for 1st Year, 1st Semester for those currently doing year 1 in 2025/2026 academic year.

viii. Certified copy of full official university academic transcripts (for Masters & PhD applicants).

ix. Research Plan (for PhD students only) – minimum 2 pages, typed in Times New Roman – 12 point font size.

x. Letter of Recommendation from former or current academic Supervisor.

xi. For PhD candidates statements of the supervisor (if required) must be uploaded until 15 March 2026.

Please Note that:

All Applicants are required to submit to DTEF copies of the following documents by

Friday, 23rd January 2026 @ 1630:

i. One paged application letter clearly indicating your intended programme of study, omang number, email address and cell phone number(s).

ii. Certified copies of all certificate(s) and transcript(s).

iii. Certified copy of Omang/Passport.

iv. Copy of Study Plan or Research Proposal (for PhD students only).

v. Copy of Resume (for both Masters & PhD students only).

vi. Proof of submission of application through the Stipendium Hungaricum online application system.

IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT:

i. Successful candidates should be aware that applying for Scholarship and nomination by DTEF does not in any way guarantee placement.

ii. Aspirants who are already on government sponsorship will NOT be considered.

iii. Applicants awarded the scholarship will be required to present their medical certificate upon compulsory medical examination in Hungary.

iv. Only successful candidates will be contacted.
