1.0 Postgraduate Programmes

1.1 Master’s Programmes

1.1.1 Master of Science in Medical Microbiology

This is a two-year programme offered over four semesters. In the first year, students take taught courses through a combination of face-to-face and online lectures. The second semester of the second year focuses on a research project relevant to Medical Microbiology, culminating in a dissertation reviewed and approved by supervisors.

1.1.2 Master of Science in Diagnostic Ultrasound

This two-year programme includes taught courses and medical imaging practical sessions. In the second year, students conduct a research project in diagnostic ultrasound and submit a dissertation.

1.1.3 Master of Science in Infection and Immunity

Offered over four semesters, the first year covers taught courses, while the second year involves a research project relevant to Infection and Immunity, ending with a dissertation.

1.1.4 Master of Science in Disaster Risk Management

This programme builds capacity in managing disaster risks and addressing socio-economic and environmental hazards. The first year involves taught courses, and the second year focuses on research in a related area of interest.

1.1.5 Master of Science in One Health

Offered over four semesters, the first year uses online classes and practical sessions, while the second year involves research focusing on the One Health triad (human, animal, and ecosystem health).

1.1.6 Master of Science in Innovation

A two-year programme with taught courses in the first year and a research project in product or process innovation in the second year.

1.1.7 Master of Science in Entrepreneurship

The programme equips students with knowledge, skills, and attitudes to thrive in business. The first year covers taught courses; the second year involves a research project on entrepreneurship.

1.1.8 Master of Business Leadership

This two-year programme targets professionals in dynamic organizations, combining taught courses and research focusing on business leadership.

1.1.9 Master of Science in Mathematical Modelling

Students apply mathematics to solve practical problems in fields such as finance, ecology, computer science, and health sciences. Includes taught courses and a research project.

1.1.10 Master of Engineering in Applied Chemical Engineering

Offered on block release with blended learning. The first year covers taught courses, and the second year focuses on a research project in chemical engineering.

1.1.11 Master of Science in Computer Science (by Research)

Students take two prerequisite courses and seminars, conduct research, and submit a dissertation focusing on advanced computer science applications.

1.1.12 Master of Science in Data Science

This programme trains students in data science, machine learning, big data analytics, and includes coursework and a research project.

1.1.13 Master of Science in Information Technology (by Research)

A two-year research-based programme with prerequisite courses, seminars, and dissertation in advanced IT applications.

1.1.14 Master of Engineering in Biomedical Engineering

1.2 PhD Programmes

1.2.1 PhD in Applied Mathematics

Offered full-time (3 years) or part-time (4 years), focusing on advanced applied research in scientific fields.

1.2.2 PhD in Business Leadership

A research-based programme developing high-level research competencies in business leadership, full-time (3 years) or part-time (5 years).

1.2.3 PhD in Innovation and Development

1.2.4 PhD in One Health

Focuses on interrelationships between human, animal, and environmental health, with coursework and research over three years.

1.2.5 PhD in Maternal and Neonatal Health

Aims to investigate maternal and neonatal mortality in Malawi through multidisciplinary research, full-time three-year programme.

Admission Requirements

  • Master’s programmes: Good Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university in the relevant field.
  • PhD programmes: Good Master’s degree in the relevant field.
  • Maternal and Neonatal Health PhD: Further scrutiny via interview.
  • PhD applicants must list two potential supervisors and provide contacts.
  • At least two years of work experience in a relevant field.
  • Letter of undertaking to pay fees with proof of reliable income.
