The Higher Education Council has announced new bilateral scholarships offered through cooperation between Rwanda and the People’s Republic of China for the 2026 to 2027 academic year. The programme supports Rwandan students who want to pursue Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD studies starting in September 2026. Eligible applicants must meet academic requirements in science fields and submit a complete application through the HEC online system before the deadline.
Overview of the Rwanda China Scholarship Programme
The bilateral scholarships support national goals that strengthen advanced training in science fields. The programme gives students full access to high level training in China through government to government cooperation. The offer covers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral studies. Applicants must prepare documents early because incomplete files reduce the chance of selection.
Eligibility Requirements
The scholarship targets students with strong performance in science related programmes.
Minimum academic requirements
Bachelor applicants need at least 80 percent in the 2025 Senior Six National Examinations or the equivalent for qualifications earned abroad.
Master applicants need a Bachelor’s degree with a Second Class Upper Division or the equivalent.
PhD applicants need a Master’s degree with a good pass.
Work recommendations strengthen applications for Master and PhD levels. These are not compulsory but increase competitiveness.
Required Documents
Applicants must submit the following documents through the HEC online system.
Application letter addressed to the Director General of HEC
National ID or passport
Curriculum Vitae
Senior Six results slip for undergraduate applicants
Degree certificates and transcripts for postgraduate applicants
Completed Chinese Government Scholarship forms
Completed medical physical examination form
Recommendation from the employer for Master and PhD applicants
You need to scan each document clearly before uploading. Files that are hard to read slow down verification.
How to Apply
Applicants must use the HEC MIS portal. The system guides you through each step, including personal details, document uploads and confirmation. You need stable internet to complete the process in one session. You should read the instructions on the announcement and attached documents because each level of study has detailed requirements.
Important Dates
The online application deadline is 17 January 2026. You should submit your file early to avoid last minute system congestion. Late submissions will not be reviewed.
Why the Programme Matters
The scholarships strengthen Rwanda’s human resource development by supporting training in strategic fields. Students gain practical and academic experience in Chinese universities. Graduates return with skills that support national development in science, technology, engineering and related areas.
