Young people around the world are actively engaged in the effort to address climate change, leading and participating in a multitude of initiatives at the local, sub-national, national, and international levels. Their strong commitment to working on this issue has also motivated them to participate at international climate negotiations since the first meetings of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

We are very glad that you are considering to apply for GSS 2017! So right below, you can find the major benefits provided through GSS 2017:

Have all your expenses covered for participating at the 23rd UNFCCC Conference of Parties (COP23) and Conference of Youth 13 (COY13):
The selected youths will have all their costs covered – including costs for all international and domestic flight tickets, costs of accommodation for about 19 days (from November 1st to November 18th, the duration including both COY13 and COP23), visa application fee, cost for travel insurance, food, local transport and additional expenses during the stay in Bonn.

Participate in a comprehensive capacity-building programme:
The GSS 2017 will also provide a robust capacity building program in order to ensure the selected youth’s meaningful participation at COP23. This programme will consist of different online training sessions (starting sometime from September 2017), webinars, on-ground preparation and mentorship from experienced trainers. This capacity-building programme will be designed to train you about UNFCCC processes and negotiations and also to support your plans and activities during COP23 to ensure that you not only know what exactly is going on in the negotiations, but also can get involved effectively!

Share your experiences and raise your voice at international level:
As a young person who cares about climate change, you may have gathered experiences worth sharing; participation in the UNFCCC process allows you to raise your concerns on the climate crisis, including both the current impacts of climate change affecting front-line communities and the expected impacts it will have on young and future generations. You get the opportunity to represent your voices in an international decision-making processes and push the policy-making towards better commitments to climate action. Being present at the decision-making process of UNFCCC not only enables you to give valuable input to your government but also remind them of the responsibilities, requirements and commitments.

Opportunity to connect your initiative and previous work on an international level and get engaged in YOUNGO:
By participating in COY13 and COP23, you will meet many like-minded young people working in the similar field as you! You will have the opportunity to get connected, exchange knowledge, and build networks you can use for the work in your initiative. Youth voices in UNFCCC are represented collectively as “YOUNGO” – the official youth constituency to UNFCCC which consists of different organisations and individuals across the world.

Eligibility
As a GSS Applicant you ensure us that:

– If selected, you will be available to join COP 23 and / COY 13 in Bonn, Germany for full duration from November 2nd – November 18th. And shall also be able to attend the online Capacity Building Training sessions prior to the conference.

– You are between 18 to 35 years old on 31st August 2017.

– You are a citizen/national of one of the countries listed below:
