Cost implication: While deployed, whereas youth volunteers are not expected to earn a salary,
they are however not expected to incur losses related to their deployment. The program
requires that volunteers are deployed into a third country other than where they are originally
from to achieve the intended youth empowerment and people to people exchange. The deployment related costs are summarized below:
Cost of deployment for one volunteer deployed for 12 months

The cost calculation may significantly vary depending on the mode of sponsorship and
country of deployment and are thus fixed individually. The exact sum is to be indicated in the
tripartite agreement.

Africa Union-Youth Volunteer Corps works to bring a lasting change and impact through youth service within the six key
areas of its focus:
- Education
- Health and HIV/ AIDS
- Peace and Security
- Information and Communications Technology
- Business and Youth Entrepreneurship
- Agriculture and Environment
Youth volunteers are deployed in one of the six focus areas of focus (example as teachers in an
elementary/ secondary school in rural areas, as providing (youth friendly) health services in
community health centers) to provide crucial services in areas where skilled man power is scars. At the same time youth volunteers would gain crucial international work experience and
acquire a great deal of leadership and soft skills, develop their self-reliance and acquire
additional professional skills.
Eligibility Criteria: Applicants have to meet the following criteria:
1. Citizen of an AU Member State living on the continent or the Diaspora;
2. Aged between 18 – 35 years;
3. Have a post-secondary certified qualification(s) (TVET, Bachelor’s degree or equivalent)
4. Available in 2018 to dedicate 12 (twelve) months for volunteer work;
5. Willing to live and work in another AU Member State;
6. Is proficient in at least one AU working language (Arabic, English, French, Portuguese);
7. Has at least one year verifiable volunteering experience and one year professional work experience.

Volunteer Entitlements:
For the successful candidates, the African Union Commission and its partners will cover the full costs of their pre-deployment training. On deployment, African Union Youth Volunteers receive the following:
1. Economy return air ticket from home town to place of deployment
2. A modest monthly stipend
3. Health insurance cover
4. Separation allowance upon successful completion of twelve months service.
